BYOT: QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

TO BYOT OR NOT TO BYOT ?

Many school districts are still struggling with the decision of whether or not to incorporate a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) strategy in their schools. A recent article titled, Poll: Nanuet Students Bringing Their Own Device to School? reveals that our neighboring district, Clarkstown, has a new initiative which allows high school students and teachers to bring their own technology devices with them to class. The Clarkstown district has seen how technology can increase student engagement in the classroom and BYOT goes one step further in getting students more involved in learning.

HOW CAN YOU USE YOUR OWN CELL PHONE, iTOUCH, TABLET, etc. DURING CLASS? give an example…

Many feel it seems that unlike Clarkstown and Nanuet school districts, many schools are wary of BYOT and still keeping learners and teachers "prisoners of the analog past" by enforcing outdated mandates that ban and block them from using the digital resources of their 21st Century world.

Lisa Nielsen, author of the "The Innovative Educator" blog, believes it is time to shatter myths about students bringing their own technology to school.  Many students are standing up and speaking out using the technology and websites they do not have access to in school to do so. BYOT is a trend that is happening all around the world, not just in schools but in the real work place as well.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? are you FOR or AGAINST and why…

Others feel there are real concerns related to BYOT to school. For example, teachers are concerned that many students will be distracted from their learning, access non-instructional materials, cheat and record, and post altered footage of classroom instruction.

WHAT OTHER CONCERNS AND ISSUES EXIST? name a concern you have or one you found while researching…

NOW POST your answers for each of the 3 questions on our class WALLWISHER page!

BYOT – Bring your own technology to class!

What exactly does it mean to BYOT to class?

Can we really use our cellphones during class???

Read the article below on the pros and cons of this new wave of technology integration into the classrooms of schools across the nation, click on 2 of the five links at the end of the article and explore those, and finally, answer the questions that follow. Tomorrow, you can share what YOU think about this revolutionary idea!

BYOT is All the Buzz

The frustrating truth is out. School districts across the country are letting go of the dream of ubiquitous one-to-one programs with purchased or leased laptops because there simply is no manageable way to afford a complete program.

The better question arising is, however, why should we?  It's not like the vast majority of students do not already have computers on them! The trick is that many of those computers are, according to many schools' rules, required to be turned off. The obvious tool here is the cellphone.  More importantly, the smart phone!

Students own tools that can be very useful to the classroom experience, so why not let them use them instead of simply waiting around, wishing for the perfect one-to-one program?

There are clearly pros and cons for the implementation of a BYOT (bring your own technology) policy for schools, and many schools across the country are looking for how to get on board.

PROS:

    • Students with smart phones or laptops have access to the Internet and search engines to bring information instantly to the classroom. They can look up information while the teacher is giving instruction to supplement what is also being presented directly.
    • New devices often have more processing power than aging computer labs and for some tasks empower students to complete activities with minimal use of school district resources.
    • Public Wi-Fi can be securely provided to students, meeting federal CIPA requirements and allowing additional tools like iPod touches to become classroom-safe, Internet portals.
    • Additional technical staff is not necessary since the students are experts in their own devices.

    CONS:

      • Digital divide – Not every student is able to afford a device or laptop and runs the risk of being at a disadvantage in a classroom where a teacher relies heavily of the technology.
      • Platform incongruity - Not every device is created equally, and not every device will provide the same experience. This can prove difficult for teachers seeking to create a consistent experience in the classroom. For example, an iPad user cannot engage in a flash video simulation, while an Android user might not have access to a free app designed for an iPod.
      • Professional development - Some teachers are more comfortable with change or new technology than others. For BYOT to be successful, a lot of time must be spent on effective professional development.

BYOT is already happening in our classrooms – the students have the tools in their pockets.  Now let's empower teachers and students to put those tools to work!
